Piecing it together: Relationships between hippocampal subfields and cognitive impairment along the Alzheimer’s disease spectrum

چکیده

Abstract Background The ability to form hippocampal‐dependent memories declines steadily in normal aging, and exponentially people with probable Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Correspondingly, the whole hippocampal formation follows same trajectories of decline. Critically, pathological changes distinguishable subfields related cognitive abilities are not well characterized in. Herein, we investigated how these subfield neuropsychological memory measures interact. Method Structural MRI data were collected from 29 biomarker‐confirmed individuals on AD spectrum (ADS) a comparison group 17 biomarker‐negative healthy adults examine interactions between subfield‐specific integrity markers. Cognitive assessments included Wechsler Logical Memory (WMS‐IV) Hopkins Verbal Learning (HVLT‐R) tests. High resolution volumes (CA1, CA2, CA3, dentate gyrus, subiculum) measured dedicated T2‐weighted slab hippocampi (TSE; 0.4 x 2.0 mm), co‐registered routine T1‐weighted (MPRAGE; 1.0 using automated segmentation (ASHS) software UPENN atlas consisting scans MCI older (Yushkevich et al., 2015). We performed cross‐sectional analysis relationship volume behavioral performance learning declarative memory. Relationships subtests probed multivariate models contrasting ADS controls, while controlling for age, education, intracranial volume. Result show that robustly predict WMS‐IV, but HVLT‐R, regardless group. Moreover, report unique contributions CA3 learning, subiculum recognition, CA2 recall. By dividing into ultra high‐resolution MRI, further elucidate their ADS‐related neurocognitive Conclusion Subfield‐specific atrophy human hippocampus may constitute sensitive measure decline patients spectrum. These results suggest specific selectively influence subprocesses memory, be used better model among

Graphene: Piecing it together.

Graphene has a multitude of striking properties that make it an exceedingly attractive material for various applications, many of which will emerge over the next decade. However, one of the most promising applications lie in exploiting its peculiar electronic properties which are governed by its electrons obeying a linear dispersion relation. This leads to the observation of half integer quantu...

Mild cognitive impairment: differential atrophy in the hippocampal subfields.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Hippocampus volumetry is a useful surrogate marker for the diagnosis of Alzheimer disease, but it seems insufficiently sensitive for the aMCI stage. We postulated that some hippocampus subfields are specifically atrophic in aMCI and that measuring hippocampus subfield volumes will improve sensitivity of MR imaging to detect aMCI. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated episo...

Disrupted functional connectivity between perirhinal and parahippocampal cortices with hippocampal subfields in patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease

Most patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease can initially present memory loss. The medial temporal lobes are the brain regions most associated with declarative memory function. As sub-components of the MTL, the perirhinal cortex, parahippocampal cortex and hippocampus have also been identified as playing important roles in memory. The functional connectivity between hip...

Parkinson's disease: piecing together a genetic jigsaw.

The role of genetics in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease has been subject to debate for decades. In recent years, the discovery of five genes and several more loci has provided important insight into its molecular aetiology. Some Parkinson's disease genes possibly cause Parkinson's disease by protein aggregation. The presence of Lewy bodies in carriers of mutations in one gene and their ...

Piecing together the ESCRTs.

High-resolution structural analysis has characterized nearly all of the individual domains of ESCRT (endosomal sorting complex required for transport) subunits, all of the core structures of the soluble complexes and many of the interactions involving domains. Recent emphasis in structural studies has shifted towards efforts to integrate these structures into a larger-scale model. Molecular sim...
